BIM names new CAO

Bowen Island Municipality is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Chief Administrative Officer, Hendrik Slegtenhorst. Mr. Slegtenhorst will replace interim CAO, Bryan Kirk and assume his role as of July 13, 2009.

Mayor Bob Turner extended a warm welcome to the new CAO, noting his excellent qualifications for the job and suitability for Bowen Island. “Mr. Slegtenhorst expressed his interest in working on behalf of a progressive community, within a municipality that has a clear strategic direction, commitments to culture and recreation and an action-oriented council. We think he’ll fit right in here, and prove to be an effective leader of our local government.”

For his part, Mr. Slegtenhorst said he’s looking forward to “getting to know the community, a place possessing natural beauty with a caring, active and informed populace.”

The seasoned administrator was formerly the Chief Administrative Officer of the Town of St. Stephen in New Brunswick, a municipality of 4,780 and one of Canada’s busiest land ports. He is also an owner of Falstaff Enterprises, a Canadian partnership founded in Vancouver in 1995 that delivers management services and export marketing of cultural goods and services.

He’s no newcomer to the west coast, having acted as executive  director of the Vancouver Museum.  He has considerable experience working for post-secondary academic institutions in four provinces as well as a track record in the corporate sector, working for Alcan Aluminum in Montréal and Turbo Resources in Calgary.

He holds a number of professional certifications in public administration,  and as top graduate with distinction in British Columbia in studies in international trade received the HSBC Bank Canada FITTskills Award of Excellence in 2003, presented by Hon. Pierre Pettigrew, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

Mr. Slegtenhorst is a published poet and writer. He is currently writing a book on the cantatas of J.S. Bach, and is trained as a classical clarinetist.
