Turf Field Project
The School Community Connections Program is funded by the Ministry of Education and the Union of BC Municipalities and is a three Phase program. The program objectives are: 1) To make best use of underutilized facilities; 2) To reduce the costs of delivering community programs; and 3) To develop prototypes that can be used to promote further school-community connections. Only one school in each School District could be selected as the recipient of the grant. The West Vancouver School District chose to apply the program to Bowen Island Community School.
There were three phases to the program and each phase had funding associated with it. Phase 1 included a $5,000 grant, Phase 2 provided a $40,000 grant, and Phase 3 was awarded up to a $125,000 towards a project on school property that could not exceed $500,000. A steering committee of volunteers, School District staff and BIM staff was established for Phase 2 to identify the project and “to promote sustainable and innovative collaboration and long term planning between the school board and the local government that responds to the needs of the community and enhances the school as a centre for community development, learning and activity.”
In December 2007 Bowen Island Municipal Council and the West Vancouver School Board unanimously passed the motion to enter into Phase 3 of the School Community Connections Program to build a 12,000 square foot synthetic grass field on school property at the Bowen Island Community School. Confirmation of the Phase 3 funding was announced in February 2008.
